About the Role

Northern Trust is seeking a Senior Backup Engineer with proven expertise in managing enterprise-level backup and recovery solutions, primarily using Cohesity. The role involves architecting, deploying, and optimizing scalable backup infrastructures across on-prem, hybrid, and cloud environments.

This is a strategic, hands-on position where you will also collaborate closely with security and infrastructure teams on business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) plans.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, deploy, and maintain scalable backup & recovery solutions across on-prem, hybrid, and cloud environments.
• Manage and optimize Cohesity (mandatory) and other Data Protection platforms (Dell Data Domain, Rubrik, Commvault).
• Configure and manage backup solutions for Microsoft 365.
• Automate backup workflows & reporting using scripting tools (Ansible, PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Define and manage backup policies, retention schedules, and ensure compliance with data protection regulations (GDPR, HIPAA, SOX).
• Monitor backup environments, perform capacity planning, and handle upgrades/patching.
• Collaborate with security & infra teams to design and test BC/DR plans.
• Provide technical advisory support for infrastructure projects, ensuring adherence to backup best practices.
• Participate in audit support & documentation for compliance requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
• Overall Experience: Minimum 5+ years in backup & recovery engineering.
• Mandatory Skills:
• Cohesity (hands-on, 5+ years).
• Experience in architecting and implementing enterprise-class backup solutions.
• Hands-on with Dell Data Domain, Rubrik, Commvault.
• Knowledge of backup for Microsoft 365.
• Strong scripting skills (Ansible, PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Compliance & data protection frameworks (GDPR, HIPAA, SOX).
• Nice-to-Have Skills:
• Knowledge of VMware, Windows, Unix/Linux, Databases.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools like ServiceNow.
• Knowledge of security principles in backup (encryption, immutable storage, air-gapped backups).
• Strong communication, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
